Chain of Custody certification requirements

The Chain of Custody certification requirements (PDF, 2.4mb) set out how accredited certifiers carry out an audit of organisations in the supply chain against the MSC Chain of Custody standard.

The Chain of Custody certification requirements can be found in part B of the MSC certification requirements. These requirements ensure that the supply chain for MSC certified seafood is secure and that the MSC Chain of Custody standard is properly applied. It specifies requirements such as

  • The need for Chain of Custody certification
  • How to define the scope of certification
  • The process of audit planning and evaluation
  • The process of audit findings and certification decision
  • How surveillance and re-certification shall be performed
  • How to certify groups of individual enterprises and multi-site companies

Current version of the MSC certification requirements

The current version of the MSC Certification Requirements was released in August, 2011. There has been no alteration to the way assessments are carried out with the development of the new certification requirements.

The aim was to consolidate previous MSC scheme documents into a single clear, concise document that did not involve substantive modification of current requirements.

These requirements are the intellectual property of the MSC and is periodically updated by the MSC Technical Advisory Board.
