MSC Fisheries Certification Methodology

The Fisheries Certification Methodology sets out the steps that accredited certifiers must take when they assess fisheries against the MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing. The Fisheries Certification Methodology specifies requirements such as:

  • How to define a fishery (unit of certification)
  • How relevant stakeholders will be alerted when a fishery enters full assessment
  • The process for inviting comment at key stages of the assessment
  • What content should be covered in the certification report
  • How to conduct a surveillance audit.

TAB Directives and Policy Advisories support the methodology
The Fisheries Certification Methodology should be read in conjunction with TAB (Technical Advisory Board) Directives and Policy Advisories which support this methodology and provide further guidance for certifiers.

Current version of the Fisheries Certification Methodology

The current version of the Fisheries Certification Methodology is version 6 (September 2006).

This methodology is the intellectual property of the MSC and is periodically updated by the MSC Technical Advisory Board.
