How to get involved

Whether fishery, retailer or supply chain business, find out how you can get involved with the MSC program.

If you are considering taking part in the MSC program – as a fishery or as part of the supply chain –  the information and links below will help you understand the MSC program and what your company needs to do to take part. We also offer support, such as presentations and staff training, and you can always contact us so we can answer any specific questions you have.

Fisheries

Every fishery needs to undergo a robust, science-based assessment to show that it meets the MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing. The first step is to appoint an independent, third-party certifier to lead the assessment.

Supply chain

If you, companies you sell to, or anyone down the line in the supply chain wants to display the MSC ecolabel then you will need to show you meet the MSC Chain of Custody standard for seafood traceability. Chain of Custody certification ensures MSC-labelled seafood is traceable through the supply chain and provides a vital assurance for fish buyers seeking MSC-certified sustainable seafood. It also provides the legal underpinning for use of the MSC’s distinctive blue ecolabel on seafood products.

Retail and brands

If you want to sell MSC-labelled fish on a wet fish counter your company will also need to Get Certified! for Chain of Custody and arrange a license to use the ecolabel. The exception to this rule is if you are only buying pre-packaged, MSC-labelled seafood. In this case you will need to check that the supply company that is processing and packaging the products has a valid Chain of Custody certificate and license for your products. You can use our 'Find a supplier' search tool to do this.

Foodservice

To offer MSC-labelled products you first need to Get Certified! for Chain of Custody and arrange a license to use the MSC ecolabel. You can also set up and run Chain of Custody on behalf of your clients, so that they do not need to do this separately. Offering this service is a great selling point for your company as it will save them the time and cost of an extra audit, and is likely to be very cost effective for you.

Restaurants

If you are preparing the fish in your own kitchens and using the MSC ecolabel on your menu you will need to Get Certified! for Chain of Custody and arrange a license to use the MSC ecolabel. Some foodservice companies will let you be part of their group Chain of Custody certificate or you may need to arrange for an independent audit by an accredited certifier. The MSC has prepared advice and case studies for independent restaurants taking part in Chain of Custody.
