Mackerel icefish
Mackerel icefish are the only vertebrates lacking
hemoglobin, which gives blood its red colour. They have also adapted
to living in the Antarctic waters by having special 'antifreeze' in
their blood that prevents ice crystals building up in the body.
Its flesh is white and firm with a high oil content. This fish species is ideal for grilling, baking or steaming. Try some of our sustainable mackerel icefish recipes below!
