Access for all fisheries
The MSC is committed to providing fair and equal access for all fisheries seeking MSC certification. Our aim is to provide small-scale and data-deficient fisheries with additional tools and guidance to allow them to demonstrate that they meet the MSC standard for sustainable fishing, and to get certified.
Below are some of the MSC tools and activities that ensure that the MSC program is accessible to all fisheries:
Risk-Based Framework
The Risk-Based Framework (RBF) is an addition to the standard MSC fishery certification requirements. It can be used to allow for fisheries lacking extensive quantitative data to be assessed against the MSC standard in a robust way. It was developed to make MSC certification more accessible to all types of fisheries, especially small-scale and developing world fisheries. More about the RBF.
Working in partnership
We work in partnership with various organisations both government and non-government, at local and international levels. The partnerships help raise awareness of the MSC program and increase the involvement of stakeholders. We also help partner organisations access the global sustainable seafood market and share good practice.
Technical assistance for fishery improvements
We provide tools to help fisheries that do not yet meet the MSC standard make improvements. These include a template and guidance document for developing an improvement action plan for your fishery, as well as a comprehensive list of fishery consultants who can provide support and offer advice on improvements. More about fishery improvements.
Stakeholder outreach
MSC staff from offices around the world provide information and advice on the benefits of the MSC certification program to stakeholders. The balanced range of stakeholder interests and geographical regions in the MSC’s governance structure supports policy direction and development to improve access to the program for small scale and developing country fisheries.
“Demand for eco-certified fish and seafood is high
all over the world. Certification under the MSC program could open
doors to trade for these fisheries and contribute to long-term social,
environmental and economic benefits in their communities,”
Oluyemisi Oloruntuyi, MSC Developing World Program Manager
