The MSC certification and ecolabelling program is a third-party program. Independent certifiers carry out assessments of fisheries and businesses against our standards for sustainable fishing and seafood traceability. This ensures our program is robust, credible and meets best practice guidelines for standard-setting organisations as set out by ISEAL and the FAO.

Only accredited certifiers can carry out assessments. To obtain accreditation certifiers must meet the requirements set out in the MSC Accreditation Manual, which ensures that certifiers fully understand the requirements of MSC standards and the certification methodologies. To ensure our complete independence from the certification process a third organisation, Accreditation Services International GmbH (ASI) is the independent organisation that accredits certifiers to conduct MSC assessments.
