Do we need to pay VAT on online assessment?
Yes, UK restaurants will need to pay VAT on all aspects of online assessment:
• Online assessment (audit costs and administration fee)
• Ecolabel licence fee (annual fee)
This
represents a business overhead VAT cost. If you can normally claim the
VAT on your business overheads, you ought to be able to claim back the
VAT on the cost of assessment as well. You should be able to claim this from the national tax authority in the usual way.
Are there any other costs?
If, during any surveillance audits, your restaurant has 3 major or 1 critical non-conformances - where the possibility of non MSC certified seafood being served with the MSC ecolabel on the menu is high - as a penalty you will be charged the full cost of the on-site audit - £320 in the UK, plus VAT.
