California Chinook Salmon

Fishery: California Chinook Salmon (Onchorhnychus tshawytscha)

Last updated: 15 April 2005

Location:
Northern and Central California, USA.

Fishing Method:
Fish are harvested by trolling with barbless hook and line using artificial lures and bait that are highly selective at targeting King Salmon.

Management:
The California salmon fishery is managed by the Pacific Fishery Management Council in federal waters (3-100 miles), with the State of California adopting conforming regulations for the waters inside three miles.  Fishing regulations each year pass through scrutiny for biological sustainability of all salmon stocks affected by the fishery.

Main Commercial market:
The primary markets for California King Salmon are the major metropolitan areas of California - San Francisco Bay, San Jose, Sacramento and Los Angeles.  California King Salmon are also exported to Oregon; Washington; Illinois; New York; Florida; Japan; Germany and the UK.

Assessment process:
The assessment began in April 2004.
