Oregon Pink Shrimp

Fishery: Oregon pink shrimp (Pandalus jordani)

Status:  The 21-day period during which parties could have lodged an intent to object to the Certification Body, TAVEL Certification Inc, determination that the fishery should be certified closed on 6 November 2007. No objections were received and the determination therefore holds. The new certificate will be in effect for 5 years, contingent on the fishery successfully completing all the required conditions and completing annual audits of the management system.

Please refer to the notification and public certification report for further information.

Last updated: 06 December 2007

Location:
Off Oregon coast in US EEZ waters (West Coast of the United States), however Oregon registered harvesters also fish off the Washington and California coasts in the US EEZ.

Fishing Method:
The majority of the fleet vessels are less than 85 feet in length, using a double rigged system of box trawls with bycatch reduction devices (BRDs), which have been mandatory in Oregon since 1 April 2003.  The fishery is conducted during the daylight hours when shrimp are congregated near the bottom.

Management:
The fishery is controlled through a variety of input controls including: mandatory commercial fishing vessel licensing; limited entry shrimp fishing permitting system (135 active permits); maximum count per pound requirements for each vessel load (160 shrimp per pound); closed fishing season which avoids the reproductive period of the shrimp stock  (Season opens 1 April and closes 31 October) and permanently installed by-catch reduction devices (BRDs).  The fishery is managed by the State of Oregon through a limited entry programme requiring harvesters have both a license for operating a commercial fishing vessel and a limited entry pink shrimp harvesting permit.

Main commercial market:
Shrimp are sold primarily into the west coast retail and food service markets.  Some product is exported.

Assessment details:
The assessment started in April 2005 and is expected to take between 12 to 18 months.
