Maryland Striped Bass

Fishery: Maryland Striped Bass  (Morone saxatilis)

Status: 
The assessment team has developed draft Performance Indicators and Scoring Guideposts against which the fishery will be scored. Stakeholders have until 31 March 2006 to send their comments to Steve Devitt, Operations Manager of TAVEL, whose contact details are below.

Location: 
The fishery is conducted within Maryland state waters inclusive of both Maryland’s portion of Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean waters.

Fishing Method:
The main methods used are tended drift gillnets and hook and line. Haul seines and pound nets are used to a lesser extent.

Management:
The fishery is managed by
the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC)
and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (Md.DNR) using a system of permits, tags, gear type, seasons, check stations, monitoring data and quota reports.
The total allowable catch in 2003 for the commercial fishery was 879,545 kg.

Main commercial market: The fish are sold fresh into the retail and restaurant chains in the eastern US.

Assessment details:
The assessment started in April 2005 and is expected to take 12-18 months.
