KDSFF Snow Crab and Flathead Flounder

Fishery: Kyoto Danish Seine Fishery Federation (KDSFF) Snow crab (Chionoecetes opilio) and Flathead flounder (Hippoglossoides dubius)

Status:
The draft report on the assessment is now available for comment by stakeholders (please see downloads section) - all comments are due before 15 April 2007. Following this, the certifier will consider all available information and make a determination on whether the fishery should be certified. Once a determination is made, a final report will be made available for a further 21 days' consultation period.

Last updated: 15 March 2007

Location:
KDSFF targets both species in Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone within the Sea of Japan.

Fishing Method:
Each vessel operates a single Danish Seine net with the cod end size and mesh dependent on the species being targeted.

Management:
Multiple layers of fishery resource management are employed in Japan. National Licences for fishing are held (Prefectural Government and Ministry Licensing) and Total Allowable Catch and Total Allowable Effort systems are regulated by the Japanese Government. In addition, a hierarchical resource management system is undertaken at the local level.

Main commercial market:
All product is sold domestically.

Assessment details:
Following a pre-evaluation assessment in April 2005, full assessment commenced in January 2006.
