Norwegian North East Arctic Saithe

Fishery: North East Arctic saithe (Pollachius virens)

Status:
The certification body, Moody Marine Ltd., has announced that the draft Assessment Report for the North East Arctic and North Sea Saithe Fisheries is now available for comment for a period of 30 days.

Any stakeholder wishing to comment on the report is invited to contact Moody Marine Ltd., no later than 5 pm GMT 19 May 2008.

Stakeholders are advised that they are to provide objective evidence in support of any additional claims or any claimed errors of fact in their response to the draft Assessment Report.

Any comments made by stakeholders shall be documented and forwarded by the certification body to its certification decision-making entity.

Location: 
The Norwegian Sea, ICES Sub-areas I and II, within the Norwegian Exclusive Economic Zone.

Fishing Method: 
Trawl, gill-net, purse-seine, Danish seine and handline (including electronic winches – multiple hooks with lures).

Management: 
The fishery is almost entirely (93%) Norwegian and managed by the Norwegian authorities. The current Norwegian Total Allowable Catch is 175 500 tonnes. Stock assessment is carried out by ICES. 

Main commercial market:
Most is exported to the Caribbean and South America, West- and Eastern Europe.

Assessment details: 
Following a pre-assessment in March 2004, full assessment commenced in February 2006.
