Australian Mackerel Icefish

Fishery: Australian Mackerel Icefish Fishery (Champsocephalus gunnari)

Status:
The certification body, Scientific Certification Inc (SCS), has announced that the Australian Mackerel Icefish Fishery will shortly be undergoing an annual surveillance audit. During the audit, SCS will be speaking with representatives of the fishery, fishery management bodies and other stakeholders of the fishery. Meetings will be carried out over the period 25 March - 4 April 2008 in Perth, Australia.

Please refer to the downloads section for further information.

Last updated: 07 March 2008

Location:
The Australian Mackerel Icefish fishery is caught off the coasts of Heard Island and McDonald Islands.  The area extends from 13 nautical miles offshore to the edge of the 200 nautical mile Australian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around the islands.

Management:
It is under the direct management of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA).  The fishery lies in Statistical Division 58.5.2 of the area of application of the Convention on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living resources (CCAMLR), which has a strong influence over the management of the fishery.  The area within 13 nautical miles of the islands is protected from fishing.  Out to 12 nautical miles, the area is listed on the World Heritage List and forms part of the Heard Island Wilderness Reserve.  Within the Australian EEZ there is also the largest no-take Marine Protected Area in the World, comprising over 16% of the entire EEZ, with no fishing for icefish permitted within the Marine Park.  In 2002/2003, the Total Allowable Catch for the fishery was 2,980 tonnes.

Assessment process:
The assessment began in August 2003 and the certification was awarded on 31 March 2006.
