PFA North Sea Herring

Fishery:  PFA North Sea Herring (Clupea harengus)

Status:
The certification body, Moody Marine Limited has announced that the PFA North Sea Herring fishery will shortly be undergoing an annual surveillance audit. During the audit, PFA North Sea Herring will be speaking with representatives of the fishery, fishery management bodies and other stakeholders of the fishery. Meetings will be carried out over the period 12-13 February 2008 in Ijmuiden, Netherlands.

Location:
The North Sea and Eastern English Channel autumn-spawning stock within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the EU and Norway, (ICES Divisions IV and VIId).

Fishing Method: 
As a pelagic or middle-dwelling species which occurs in large shoals this stock is fished by pelagic trawlers.

Management:
The stock is managed according to the EU-Norway Agreement (December 1997) which is implemented in EU member states and Norway under National management systems, advised by ICES.  The fishery also implements, on a voluntary basis, the additional management measures as set out in the PFA Policy Plan.

Assessment details:
The assessment began in November 2002 and the certificate was awarded in May 2006.
