Fishery: Canadian Northern Prawn Trawl Fishery (Pandalus borealis)
Status:
The certification body, Moody Marine, has announced that the draft Assessment Report for the Canadian Northern Prawn Fishery is now available for public comment for a period of 30 days.
Any stakeholder wishing to comment on the report is invited to contact Paul Knapman, of Moody Marine, no later than 5pm GMT 8 May 2008.
Stakeholders are advised that they are to provide objective evidence in support of any additional claims or any claimed errors of fact in their response to the draft Assessment Report. Any comments made by stakeholders shall be documented and forwarded by the certification body to its certification decision-making entity.

Area SFA 8 Harmonised assessment:
Due to an overlap of certification assessments of the Canadian Northern Prawn Fisheries and Gulf of St Lawrence Northern Shrimp a harmonised process has been agreed between TAVEL Certification Inc. and Moody Marine Ltd., to coordinate certification activities in the Shrimp Fishing Area 8 (SFA 8).
The certification bodies have announced the release of the final Performance Indicators and Scoring Guideposts (PI&SGs) that will be used to evaluate Area SFA 8 against the MSC Principles and Criteria.

Atlantic Canadian waters including the Newfoundland/Labrador/Davis Strait 'Northern Shrimp Fishery in Shrimp Fishing Areas 5, 6, 7), the Gulf of St Lawrence (SFA 8) and the Scotian Shelf (SFA’s 13, 14, 15).

Management:
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Canada, leads management of the fishery through Divisions at St Johns (Northern Shrimp), Quebec/Moncton (Gulf of St Lawrence) and Dartmouth (Scotian Shelf) with separate Advisory Committees for each area.
Management of the fishing operations is principally through licence conditions and regulations but also includes: seasonal closures, limited/closed entry, mandatory bycatch reduction devices, minimum mesh size, Total Allowable Catch limits, Vehicle Monitoring Systems, at-sea inspections, observer coverage and dockside monitoring.
Main commercial market:
The fleet focuses on shell-off cold water product, which is primarily processed on land. Predominant markets are in the U.S. and Europe. Smallest shrimp are mostly frozen and exported to peeling plants.
Assessment details:
The assessment process began in October 2006 and is expected to take 17 months.
