Location:
The fisheries take place along the northern Norwegian coast, including spawning areas of the Lofoten islands, the southern part of the Barents Sea and in the Svalbard area. The fisheries under assessment include the North East Arctic stocks for both species in the International Council for the Exporation of the Seas (ICES) Sub-Areas I and II.

Fishing Method:
Longline. Vessels within the Domstein Longliner Partnership currently have quota of:

5 000 tonnes Cod out of a total Norwegian quota of 224 600 tonnes; and

2 500 tonnes Haddock out of a total Norwegian quota of    71 500 tonnes

Management:
The NE Arctic cod and haddock are shared stocks present in Norwegian and Russian jurisdictional areas and are managed under the Norwegian-Russian Commission. Decisions are strongly influenced by impartial scientific advice from ICES. Agreed Total Allowable Catch limits (TACs) are then divided by between Norway, Russia and other countries.
The fisheries management systems are under the ultimate direction of the Ministry of Fisheries, responsible for the authorisation of legislation and regulations. Technical support in the development of regulation and the implementation of regulations is the responsibility of the Directorate of Fisheries. Scientific support, and stock assessments is carried out by the Institute of Marine Research.

Commercial market:
Most of the product from the Domstein Longliner Partners are sold within the EU and Norway.

Assessment details:
The assessment process is expected to take 12-14 months.
