Vietnamese Ben Tre Clam Fishery

Fishery: Vietnamese Ben Tre Clam (Meretric lyrata) Hand gathered Fishery 

Status:
The certification body, Moody Marine Ltd, has announced the release of the draft Performance Indicators and Scoring Guideposts (PI&SGs) that will be used to evaluate the Ben Tre Clam fishery against the MSC Principles and Criteria.

Interested parties are invited to contact Moody Marine by 5 pm GMT, 13 June 2008 if they wish to comment.

This fishery is also undergoing a parallel assessment using the MSC's pilot methodology for the assessment of small-scale and data-deficient fisheries. Please refer to the 'Pilot Assessment' pages of the MSC website for further information about the parallel assessment.

Fishing Method: 
By hand or metal rakes with a net pocket. 

Management:
The Fishery is managed on national and provincial levels. At a national level, the Ministry of Fisheries sets regulations such as limiting the amount of area in which clam management and harvesting is permitted etc. At Provincial level, the Fisheries Department of ben Tre sets by-laws controlling minimum landing size, equipment restrictions etc. Within the Ben Tre province, clams are managed in three coastal districts of Binh Dai, Ba Tri and Thanh Phu.
