Stornoway Nephrops Trawl Fishery

Fishery: Stornoway Nephrops (Nephrops norvegicus) Trawl Fishery

Status:
The certification body, Moody Marine Limited, has announced the release of the final Performance Indicators and Scoring Guideposts (PI&SGs) that will be used to evaluate the Stornoway Nephrops Trawl Fishery against the MSC Principles and Criteria.

Please refer to the downloads section for further information.

Last Updated:
 13 March 2008

Location:
The fishery takes place in Stornoway, specifically North and South Minch, ICES Area VI.

Fishing Method:
Otter Trawl

Management:
The Scottish Executive Environmental and Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD), Fisheries Department and the Fish Producers Organisation are directly involved in the management of the fishery in terms of apportioning quota and collection of return figures. These organisations sit within the overall EU Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Scientific support is provided through FRS within Scotland and more generally from ICES.

Stocks are controlled through quota allocation. SEERAD Fisheries Departments manage quota through Producer Organisation's (POs), including transfer and quota swap. Total quotas for the Stornoway fleet in 2006 were 17,676 tonnes. Additional management measures include minimum net, mesh and landing size.

Commercial market:
There are two markets exploited by Young's Seafood, a frozen langoustine product, principally for the southern European export market, and utilisation of tails in Scampi production, largely for the domestic UK market.

Assessment details:
The assessment process is expected to take 12-14 months.
