Norwegian North Sea and Skagerrak Herring (3 fisheries)

Fisheries: Norwegian North Sea and Skagerrak Herring (Clupea harengus) Fisheries

Status:
The certification body, Moody Marine Limited, has announced the release of the final Performance Indicators and Scoring Guideposts (PI & SGs) that will be used to evaluate the Norwegian North Sea and Skagerrak Herring Fisheries against MSC Principles and Criteria.

Please refer to the downloads section for further information.

Last updated: 28 March 2008

Location:
1. Norwegian North Sea herring fisheries - North Sea (ICES Division IV)
2. Norwegian Skagerrak herring fisheries - Skagerrak (ICES Dision IIIa)

Fishing Method:
Purse seine (North Sea and Skagerrak) and pelagic trawl (North Sea).

Management:
The overall responsibility for the management of the resources resides with the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries. The detailed work of developing regulations and implementing them after their approval by the Minister is the chief task of the Fisheries Directorate.

The stock is managed according to the EU-Norway Agreement. This agreement is implemented in Norway under National management systems, advised by ICES.

Norwegian quota for 2007 was 97,312 tonnes in the North Sea and 9,251 tonnes in the Skagerrak.

Note: As the stocks are seperate, and there are two gear types used in the North Sea, the assessment will need to consider there fisheries separately, although the assessments will take place simultaneously.

Main Commercial market:
mostly exported to the EU.

Assessment process:
The assessment process is expected to take 8 months. Please see the download section for a detailed assessment timeline.
