The primary objective of this stage is to collect information on the fishery and in particular to speak to representatives of the fishery, fishery management bodies and other stakeholders of the fishery.
Meetings will be carried out over the period 19 – 20 June 2008 in Seattle.
Please refer to the announcement in the downloads section for further details.
This assessment will be fully informed by the assessment of the MSC certified BSAI Alaska (Pacific) Cod fishery.
Last updated: 08 May 2008
Location: Gulf of Alaska (GoA)
Fishing Method: Trawl, Longline, Jig, Pot
Management: The fisheries are managed primarily by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, in association with various other management agencies including the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the US State Department, the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, the US Coast Guard and the state fishery management agencies of Alaska, Washington and Oregon.
Objectives for the management of the fisheries are outlined in the Fishery Management Plans for the relevant areas. The current management of the fisheries includes a broad range of regulations designed to maintain the productivity of the stocks, provide for statistically reasonable catch quotas, set time, area and gear restrictions and set limits on the harvest level of the mature spawning stock. Other regulations are in place to minimise bycatch of target and non-target species and limit impact on the traditional fisheries of the region. Observer programmes are in place.
The total allowable catch of Pacific cod in the GoA for all gear types in 2007 is 52,264 metric tonnes.
Main Commercial market: Domestic, Asian and European consumers.
Assessment process: The assessment process is expected to take 14-20 months. Please see the download section for a detailed assessment timeline.
