South Georgia Icefish Fishery

Fishery: South Georgia Icefish Pelagic Trawl Fishery (Champsocephalus gunnari)

Status:
The certification body, Moody Marine, has announced the release of the draft Performance Indicators and Scoring Guideposts (PI&SGs) that will be used to evaluate the South Georgia Icefish Pelagic Trawl Fishery against the MSC Principles and Criteria.

Interested parties are invited to contact Dr Andrew Hough by 5pm GMT, 12th April 2008 if they wish to comment. 

Moody Marine has also announced the membership of the assessment team.

Location:
South Georgia Maritime Zone, within CCAMLR Subarea 48.3

Fishing Method: 
Pelagic Trawl

Management:
The fishery is managed by GSGSSI, within the overall management framework of CCAMLR. GSGSSI is supported in its management activities by the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office and through scientific support organisations MRAG and British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

Fishery and environmental objectives are established for South Georgia and CCAMLR fisheries and these are applied to this fishery. Stock and ecosystem objectives are implemented through a number of Conservation Measures, notably:
• Controls on gear used
• Closure of the 12 nm zone around SG
• TAC’s
• Move-on rules related to undersized fish
• By-catch controls and move-on rule
• Seabird mitigation and by-catch limits
• Carrying of observers
• Data reporting
• Participation in research cruises.

Main Commercial market:
Catches are all exported. Significant markets are currently in SE Asia and eastern Europe.

Assessment process:
The assessment process is expected to take 12 months. Please see the download section for a detailed assessment timeline.
