Fishery: PFA North East Atlantic Mackerel Pelagic Trawl Fishery (Scomber scombrus)
Status: The certification body, Moody Marine Ltd, has announced that the PFA North East Atlantic Mackerel Pelagic Trawl Fishery has entered full assessment. Initially Moody Marine seeks to open a dialogue with all organisations or individuals with a direct interest in the fishery.
Anyone wishing to provide comments or information to the assessment process (relevant to the status of the stock, ecosystem interactions or fishery management practices) is invited to contact Dr Andrew Hough.
Moody Marine are also in the process of assembling an assessment team of individuals with experience of stock assessment, ecosystem interactions and fishery management appropriate to this fishery. Any nominations of suitable individuals are welcomed.
As other mackerel fisheries on the same stock have already been subject to MSC certification, or are under assessment at present, the outcomes of these other assessments will be considered, with harmonisation between assessments occuring wherever necessary.
Please refer to the downloads section for further details.

Location: North East Atlantic, ICES areas VI, VII, VIII, EC waters of Vb, non-EC waters of IIa, International waters of XII and XIV. The pelagic trawl vessels target mackerel in the Bay of Biscay, the English Channel and the waters around Ireland and the Northern North Sea.
Fishing Method: Pelagic Trawl
Management: The stock is managed according to the EU-Norway-Faroe Islands Agreement. This agreement is implemented in EU member states and Norway under National management systems, advised by ICES. This fishery ‘unit of certification’ also implements, on a voluntary basis, the additional management measures as set out in the Pelagic Freezer-Trawler Association (PFA) Policy Plan
PFA combine quotas for parts of the Dutch, German, English and French fleets, although other vessels may also be eligible to join the PFA ‘unit of certification’, if they are included in the scope of the assessment.
PFA total quota is approximately 1/4 of the total fishery TAC of 234,000 MT in 2008.
Main Commercial market: The major market for MSC certified mackerel would be within the EU. Some product is exported outside of the EU.
Assessment process: The assessment process is expected to take 9 months. Please see the download section for a detailed assessment timeline.
