Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) Trap Fishery and Chum Salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) Trap Fishery.

The certification body, SCS, has announced that the fisheries have entered full assessment. Initially SCS seeks to open a dialogue with all organisations or individuals with a direct interest in the fishery.

Please refer to the downloads section for further information.

Last updated: 21 April 2008

Location:
Iturup Island, Russia. The proposed unit of certification includes four rivers: Kuriljka river, Reidovaya river, Rybatskaya river and Olya river.

Fishing Method:
Coastal stationary fish traps

Management:
Managed by the Russian Government & JSC Gidrostory, a private company which owns and operates the fishing, processing, and shipment of salmon at Iturup Island, Kuril Islands, Russia.

The Russian management agency is located in Moscow with branch offices in various states throughout Russia.  The office in charge of assisting the management of the Iturup Island salmon fisheries is located in Sakhalin, Russia.

Policies and regulations are set in Moscow through a consultative process that involves the fisheries agency as well as other government agencies and an independent council that reviews government policies before they are finalized and implemented management of the salmon fisheries is accomplished by setting a TAC each year that limits the commercial catch. The TAC is set using pre-season forecasts  In addition, escapement goals are set and enforced through daily monitoring in-river. Meeting escapement goals takes precedent over the TAC.  Government biologists and enforcement officers are stationed on Iturup Island and monitor the escapements and catches throughout the season.

Hatcheries are located on two of the four river systems considered for certification; Kuriljka and Reidovaya rivers.  Rybatskaya and Olya rivers are without hatcheries.  Hatchery-reared fish are only released on the two rivers where the hatcheries are located.  The other two rivers are a considerable distance north of the rivers with hatcheries and do not have hatchery releases.

Main Commercial market:
Asia, Europe, North America

Assessment process:
The assessment process is expected to take 16 months. Please see the download section for a detailed assessment timeline.
