Last Updated: 28 February 2008

Location:
Gulf of Alaska (GOA).

Fishing Method:
The GOA pollock fishery is a trawl fishery. The fleet is comprised of trawl catcher vessels that deliver their catch onshore for processing.

Management:
In 2005, the Acceptable Biological Catch (ABC) and Total Allowable Catch (TAC) for the GOA pollock fishery was 91,710 metric tonnes. The North Pacific Fishery Management Council is charged with developing management measures for the fishery, including recommending ABC and TAC levels. The Council's recommendations are submitted to the Secretary of Commerce for approval.

Main commercial market:
The primary markets for Alaska pollock products are Japan, the U.S. and Europe.  Japan is the principal market for surimi (minced fish) and roe products. The U.S. and Europe are the main markets for fillet-type products.  Fillets are used for fish and chips and fish fingers; surimi  is used for imitation crab and similar products.

Season:
The Gulf of Alaska pollock TAC has been set spatially and temporally.  There are four seasons in the Central and Western GOA: January 20, March 10, August 25, and October 1.  Twenty five percent of the TAC has been allocated to each season.

Assessment details:
The assessment process began in January 2001. A joint Fishery and Chain of Custody Certificate was issued by the Certification Body on 27 April 2005.
