Fishery: Canadian Pacific halibut (Hippoglosus stenlolepis)
Status:
The certification body, Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), has advised that the assessment process for the fishery is continuing. The industry (through the Pacific Halibut Management Association - PHMA) and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) have provided submissions to the assessment team addressing the Performance Indicators.
Additionally, SCS has announced that the assessment team will be meeting with DFO in July 2007. Stakeholders interested in providing input to the assessment team are invited to contact Chet Chaffee at SCS.

The fishery takes place in Pacific waters of British Columbia, Canada.
Fishing Method:
Bottom hook and line gear (longline).
Management:
The Pacific Halibut Fishery in British Columbia, Canada, has been managed by the International Pacific Halibut Commission since 1923. This is a joint US / Canadian Fisheries management agency. The fishery is currently managed under an IFQ System.
Main commercial market:
For halibut, the North American Market is the major market, however some product is exported to the UK and Europe.
Assessment details:
The assessment process began in February 2003 and was reinitiated in March 2007. SCS anticipate that the assessment will take between 6-8 months.
