MSC acknowledged as only FAO consistent internationally recognised ecolabel for fisheries

In a letter to the Dutch Parliament the Dutch Fisheries Minister, Mrs Gerda Verburg, acknowledges the MSC as the only internationally recognised ecolabel for sustainable well-managed fisheries that is completely consistent with the FAO Guidelines.
Translated, Minister Verburg’s letter reads:
“I will only support certification processes that are based on third party certification. This means that the certification has to comply with criteria from independent and impartial experts and also have to comply with the FAO 'Guidelines for the ecolabelling of fish and fishery products from marine capture fisheries'. The MSC labelling programme that is known within the industry is an example of a certification programme that meets these criteria. As for now, the MSC is the only internationally recognised ecolabel for sustainable well-managed fisheries that is completely consistent with the FAO Guidelines.”
“The starting point of the MSC certification is that the fishery is carried out in such a way that the natural functioning of the ecosystem is maintained, that the fishery is carried out in such a way that it does not jeopardize biodiversity and that, should an impact on the ecosystem have occurred, recovery must be able to place. The involvement of independent certifiers and stakeholder consultation such as NGOs ensures that when the fishery is awarded with the certificate this fishery really is a responsible fishery.”
The Netherlands commit to sustainable fishing
The statement follows a series of commitments made to sustainable fishing in the Netherlands:
- At the end of 2008 the Dutch parliament voted to make one million Euros available for fishery assessment and certification in the 2009 budget through the European Fisheries Fund budget.
- Earlier in the year the Dutch government, Dutch fisheries industry and NGOs joined together in a landmark commitment to start the journey towards MSC certification for the Dutch demersal fisheries that make up over 90% of the landings at the Dutch auctions. If successful, the groundbreaking approach means that nearly all Dutch North Sea fisheries will be well into the assessment process by 2012.
- In February 2008 the Dutch Fishmongers Association VNV started a groundbreaking project to encourage its network of 750 independent fish shops to sell and promote fish with the MSC’s internationally recognised blue eco-label, by helping them to get certified under the MSC’s Chain of Custody standard for seafood traceability.

"Ook certificering van vis of visserijtechnieken is een belangrijk instrument in de noodzakelijke omslag naar een meer duurzame visserij. Hoewel ik van mening ben dat certificering primair een verantwoordelijkheid van het bedrijfsleven is, heb ik onlangs de regeling "certificering in de visketen" gepubliceerd. Met de openstelling van deze subsidieregeling beoog ik een extra bijdrage te leveren aan de bescherming van de visbestanden. Een belangrijk bijkomend voordeel is dat de consument door duidelijke herkenbaarheid een duurzaam beheerde vis kan kopen. Uit de signalen die mij bereiken, leid ik af dat er in de Nederlandse visserij veel belangstelling voor de regeling bestaat.
Ik ondersteun slechts certificeringtrajecten die gebaseerd zijn op een 'derde partij-certificering'. Dit betekent dat de certificering moet voldoen aan eisen van onafhankelijke en onpartijdige deskundigen en ook dient te voldoen aan FAO- "Guidelines for the ecolabelling of fish and fishery products from marine capture fisheries". Het binnen de Nederlandse visserij bekende MSC-keurmerk is een voorbeeld van een certificerings-programma dat voldoet aan deze eisen. Vooralsnog is het MSC het enige internationaal erkende eco-label voor goede beheerde, duurzame visserij dat volledig voldoet aan FAO-richtlijnen. Uitgangspunten en ijkpunten in het MSC-traject zijn dat de visserij zodanig wordt uitgevoerd dat het natuurlijke functioneren van het ecosysteem behouden blijft, dat de visserij zo wordt uitgevoerd dat de biodiversiteit niet in gevaar komt en dat als er een impact is geweest op het eco-systeem, herstel moet kunnen plaatsvinden. De betrokkenheid in het traject van onafhankelijke certificeerders en ook consultaties van stakeholders als NGO's, maakt dat het MSC-traject op dit moment de nodige waarborgen biedt dat er bij toekenning sprake is van een verantwoorde visserij."
