MSC announces new office opening in France to support local growth

14 October 2009

In response to the growing supply and demand for certified sustainable seafood in France, the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has opened a local office in Paris.

Edouard Le Bart, Commercial Manager for the MSC in France, will lead the MSC’s commercial and fisheries outreach activities in France. Anyes Estay, Communications Officer, will be responsible for the communications strategy of the MSC in France. The team’s objectives in France will be to facilitate access and encourage participation of French fisheries, processors, retailers and foodservice in the MSC programme and continue to further raise logo awareness.

"We are very excited about the opening of the new office in Paris as it marks an important step forward for the MSC's outreach work in France," commented Edouard Le Bart. "Four fisheries are currently undergoing full assessment and the number of MSC-labelled products available in France has increased by 158% over the past twelve months. Given the tremendous potential of the largest seafood market in Europe, we are confident that our new set-up in Paris will help us build strong participation in our programme and boost the visibility of the MSC ecolabel."

Nicolas Guichoux, MSC Regional Director – Europe, commented: "Working alongside Anyes and Edouard, this year I've witnessed the enthusiasm and hard work of our French partners. Before moving into Spain and Italy, the opening of this new office in Paris reaffirms our commitment to develop the MSC programme in the largest European seafood markets.  After its gestation in Anglo-Saxon countries, the MSC has become an international tool. The MSC is today a key player and the world's leading certification and ecolabelling programme for sustainably caught seafood."

Recent developments of the French market

The move comes soon after several recent developments of the market for certified sustainable seafood in France:

- 4 French fisheries are currently undergoing full assessment
- 45 seafood processors in France have been certified for processing seafood from fisheries that meet the MSC environmental standard
- the number of MSC-labelled products available in France has increased from 57 products in October 2008 to 147 products in October 2009 - this represents a  158% increase for the 12 month period
