MSC certified London boroughs get top plaice for sustainable food
21 November 2011
London: Ten London boroughs have been praised for taking the bold step of achieving MSC certification in a report issued today. The Good Food for London report (published by London Food Link) celebrates the achievements made by boroughs across the capital in showing leadership in key food issues from sustainable seafood to community food growing. The report highlights sourcing and serving sustainable fish as an area of achievement for many boroughs. It praised thirteen of the boroughs included in the report for “taking at least one significant step to support sustainable fish” with four in particular praised for making further commitments across their catering portfolios.
The boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Bromley, Camden, Greenwich, Havering, Islington, Redbridge, Richmond-upon-Thames, Tower Hamlets and Westminster are MSC certified across school canteens and restaurants in their central catering contracts. Schools in these LEAs have made MSC certified fish a permanent feature of their menus. In addition, teaching staff in many schools across the certified boroughs are now teaching their pupils about sustainable fishing and how it can provide solution to overfishing using the Fish and Kids project as inspiration.
What the MSC say
Ruth Westcott from the MSC said: “We wanted to take this opportunity to praise the commitments made by these ten boroughs in achieving certification and educating children across London about sustainable fishing. The Good Food for London report shows that schools across London are leading the way and taking action to ensure that the food they serve up is sustainable. Given that London spends over £1billion every year on fish alone, it’s brilliant to see that these 10 boroughs are ensuring that the fish that they order is sustainably sourced. “
