Unit of certification

The unit of certification is the unit that is assessed by certifiers against the MSC environmental standard. It is defined as the fishery or fish stock (a biologically distinct unit) combined with the fishing method/gear and practice (the vessel/s) pursuing that stock.  This is set at the beginning of the assessment.

Sardine (Sardina pilchardus)

Geographical range of fishing operations

ICES Management Area VIIe and VIIf.
Within the six nautical mile limit of the Cornish coast.

Method of capture

Ring nets and drift nets.

Stock

North Atlantic sardine, from the southern Bay of Biscay to the North Sea and the English Channel, excluding the Mediterranean Sea.

Management

The Cornish Sea Fisheries Association, operating under laws of the United Kingdom and under the umbrella of the European Union.
