More about Canada northern shrimp

Pandalus borealis (the candidate shrimp species also known as northern shrimp) is distributed in boreal regions throughout the Atlantic Ocean. It typically occurs in high salinity waters with temperature in the range of 0-5C on soft mud or sand/silt bottoms at depths of 50-500m. The species is found throughout the northwest Atlantic Ocean including the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence and in the St. Lawrence River estuary, primarily at depths of 150 to 350m. P. borealis are protandric hermaphrodites, changing sex in the course of their life cycle, achieving male sexual maturity in about two and a half years, then becoming female between four and five years old.

Shrimp are associated with the bottom during the day but migrate vertically at night for feeding purposes, although feeding occurs on the bottom as well as in the water column. Food composition has not been documented for shrimp in the northern Gulf of St. Lawrence but studies elsewhere have found that the shrimp diet consists of detritus (particulate matter of plant and animal origin), a wide variety of zooplankton species, phytoplankton and benthic species such as polychaete worms.

More about the fishing methods

Most of the fishing is conducted by otter trawlers ranging in length from 16.7 m (55 feet) to 27.4 m (90 feet).

Fishery tonnage

28,800 MT

Commercial market

Currently, there are five shrimp processing plants in Quebec and two in New Brunswick. The broad market split is between product exported to the European market (60%) and product remaining within the Canada and US domestic markets (40%).

The holders of this MSC certificate are five shrimp processors from Québec that are members of the Association of Quebec Seafood Producers (AQIP), and two New Brunswick-based shrimp processors.

The five members of AQIP are Crevettes du Nord Atlantique Inc.,Crustacés des Monts Inc.,Fruits de Mer de l’est du Québec Ltée.,Tabatière Seafood and Pêcheries Marinard Ltée.

Produits Belle-Baie Ltée is a seafood processor located in Caraquet, New Brunswick; and L'Association Coopérative des Pêcheurs de l'Ile Ltée. of Lameque, New Brunswick, is a cooperative of harvesters that have also invested in processing facilities for northern shrimp.

Together, these seven companies sponsored the full assessment for MSC certification for this fishery.

This client group issued a statement about the fishery’s MSC certification, saying, “Gulf of St. Lawrence northern shrimp are already considered one of the highest quality in the world, free of chemicals. This MSC certification now proves that our fishery is among the most sustainable in the world. Certification is the culmination of a three-year joint effort of the primary partners in the fishery, including harvesters, processors, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) and provincial partners. It affirms the close ties between Quebec and New Brunswick fishing industry members, and the commitment to the corrective action plan demonstrates our collective desire for an environmentally and economically sustainable fishery. The clients wish to especially thank DFO staff who contributed enormously to the project and to TAVEL Certification for leading us through this intricate process.”

Managed under Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the fishery has numerous measures in place to ensure a minimal environmental impact and good management. Otter trawls fitted with Nordmore separator grates ensure reduced bycatch as fish pass through the grate and escape from the trawl. The captain of each vessel keeps a logbook recording the location and number of hours fished and an estimate of quantities caught. Since the early 1990s, at-sea observers have been in operation, in addition to all shrimp landings being monitored at dockside.

The Gulf of St. Lawrence northern shrimp trawl fishery’s season extends from April 1 to December 31 each year.

Overview of how the Gulf of St. Lawrence northern shrimp fishery scored in assessment against the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) environmental standard for sustainable fishing.

This is an overview of how the Gulf of St. Lawrence northern shrimp trawl Shrimp Fishing Areas (SFA) - 9 (Anticosti), 10 (Sept Iles) and 12 (The Estuary) fishery, scored in assessment against the MSC standard. For the certifiers evaluation please download the full public certification
report with detailed information on the performance of this fishery against
the criteria of the MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing.

The fishery scored as follows in assessment against the MSC standard for sustainable fishing. The highest possible score for each principle is 100 and a fishery must score at least 80 against each principle to get certified:

Sustainability strengths

Some points on which the fishery scored over 90 are outlined below.

Principle 1: the state of the fish stock

The complete geographical range of the target species, including migration patterns, is understood, verified and updated periodically.

All aspects of the life history of the species are clearly documented and understood, facilitating a comprehensive quantitative evaluation of the effects of fishing.

Principle 2: the impact of the fishery on the marine environment

Quantitative information is available on all non-target species affected by the fishery including their distribution, abundance and ecology.

Monitoring programmes periodically verify the effectiveness of management measures to modify fishery practices when necessary. Fishing mortality is negligible if the non-target population is below the precautionary limit.

Principle 3: the fishery management systems

The management system has a comprehensive stock health monitoring programme. Full records are kept of monitoring results and these are made available to relevant research and management bodies. The results of monitoring efforts are compiled, analyzed, and disseminated to fishery managers such that management and research efforts can be informed as to needed improvements in a timely manner.

Research conducted by the fishing industry and other organization is co-coordinated with existing research plans of the management system.

Challenges

In order to ensure its continuing
sustainable operation this fishery made a commitment to improving its performance
where it scored between 60-80. Some of the actions the fishery has committed to
are:

Benthic fauna data, collected during research conducted by DFO in 2006 and 2007 as well as 2008 data, will be used to characterize the benthic fauna of the northern GSL, including the areas exploited by the shrimp fishery. Sediment sampling will be performed during research surveys in 2008, 2009 and 2010; these data will be used to characterize habitat patterns. Fishery statistics from the fishing fleet collected since 1982 by DFO will allow a description of the fishing effort distribution and identify areas where trawling impact could be more important. Statistical analysis will permit to relate the abundance and the diversity of the benthic fauna with perturbed areas and sediments types.
