The North and South Pacific fisheries are small, family-run fisheries operating out of San Diego, USA. Both were awarded the MSC ecolabel for sustainable fishing in September 2007, becoming the very first tuna fisheries in the world to be certified as sustainable.

Pacific albacore tuna is a highly migratory species. It moves throughout large areas of the Pacific Ocean. Albacore tuna is well-known for its white and tasty meat and MSC-labelled albacore tuna is available in a glass jar, canned and as a delicious smoked product.

The fish are caught using pole and troll fishing techniques and the fishers pride themselves on the care they take to protect the marine environment. Skipper Bobby, also known as Booger, is a third generation family fisherman. On his Tuna Tales blog (http://tunatales.typepad.com/), Bobby explains “I was raised fishing on a 30 tonne bait-hook and line boat just like I’m doing right now.” In fact, the ‘pole and troll’ technique has been unchanged for over 100 years. Bobby sees the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) as promoting a healthy way of catching fish.

“The MSC is going to promote the fishery. It’s good because it shows that – and you’d be surprised – a lot of fishermen are actually conservationists because we’re so close to nature. We live on what we catch. The better fishermen are the ones that are in tune with nature.”

Bobby 'Booger' Blocker, skipper

“Tuna fishermen seem to get a bad rap in a worldwide way. Most of the fishermen who are left love the ocean: you’ve got to love it because it’s real hard work. Being certified sustainable is important to us. Fishermen who are doing the right thing should prove that they are and talk about it. That’s what this certificate is all about.”

Jack 'Bandini' Webster, skipper

Natalie Webster, who along with her husband Jack was part of a group of fishers who co-founded the American Albacore Fishing Association (AAFA), says MSC certification will help secure the future for fishing families like theirs. “Since we received MSC certification we’ve had increased interest in our fish,” she said. “Buyers from all over the U.S. and places in Europe are calling us wanting our products. People want to eat sustainably caught fish, and the MSC label is in demand.”

Overview of how the AAFA tuna Fishery scored in assessment against the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) environmental standard for sustainable fishing.

This is an overview of how the American Albacore Fishing Association (AAFA) Pacific albacore tuna - north fishery scored in
assessment against the MSC standard. For the certifiers evaluation
please download the full public certification report with detailed information on the performance of this fishery against
the criteria of the MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing.

The fishery scored as follows in assessment against the MSC standard for sustainable fishing. The highest possible score for each principle is 100 and a fishery must score at least 80 against each principle to get certified:

MSC Principle

Fishery Performance

Principle 1: Sustainability of Exploited Stock

Overall : 82 PASS

Principle 2: Maintenance of Ecosystem

Principle 3: Effective Management System

Overall : 95 PASS

Sustainability strengths

Some of the points on which the fishery scored over 90 are outlined below.

Principle 1: the state of the fish stock

The species is well-understood – in terms of its life cycle and geographical rang. This means that the stock, and the impacts of the fishery on the stock, can be monitored accurately to ensure its long term sustainability.

Albacore naturally segregate by size, which makes it easier for fishers to avoid catching young fish.

There are good systems in place for recording and verifying catches.

Principle 2: the impact of the fishery on the marine environment

Both pole-and-line and troll/jig fishing methods catch the target species almost exclusively. Bycatch of non-target species is relatively rare. This is especially true for pole-and-line fishing, where the fisher has visual contact with individual fish being caught. In addition gear loss is low.

Habitats relevant to fishing activities are well-known

The nature of pole & line and troll/jog fishing methods – that the activity happens near the sea’s surface - means that there is no contact with the sea bed and no known impact on the habitat.

Principle 3: the fishery management systems

Management objectives aim to identify and reduce the impact of the fishery and to protect populations of target and not-target species, essential marine habitat, and ecosystems.

Challenges

In order to ensure its continuing
sustainable operation this fishery made a commitment to improving its performance
where it scored between 60-80. Some of the actions the fishery has committed to
are:

Demonstrating support for responsible management practices to ensure the long term sustainability of the stock in relevant scientific, regulatory and governmental discussions.

Responding to new information on stock status to ensure the sustainability of the stock.

unit) combined with the fishing method/gear and practice (the vessel/s)
pursuing that stock. This is set at the beginning of the assessment.

More about tuna

Albacore tuna is a highly migratory tuna found in oceans around the world. They mature relatively early, at approximately 6 years and have a moderate lifespan, to about 10 to 12 years.

Albacore are generally considered inherently resilient to fishing pressure because they:
- have a high rate of intrinsic increase
- mature at an early age
- produce many eggs, about 2.6 million per spawning
- are not long-lived
- have a broad distributional range
- do not exhibit any characteristics that increase the ease or population consequences of capture

As a highly migratory species albacore are targeted by a number of different fishing fleets from several nations. However, information from all fisheries catching albacore tuna is available and helps to overcome this potential problem.

More about the fishing methods

Trolling for albacore consists of towing artificial lures with barbless hooks, ‘trolls’, behind a fishing vessel at a speed of about 6 knots. If fishers see or feel a tuna on a line they pull it in. Trolling brings fish to the surface and helps to locate schools of albacore. The vessel stops near the school, and fishers keep the school close by throwing small amounts of live fish chum, often anchovy.

In pole-and-line fishing, individual fishers use a stout pole, formerly constructed of bamboo and now made of fibreglass or a high-technology composite, with a short line that has a single barbless hook with either an artificial lure or live bait.

Fishers may use one or both of these methods together for harvesting. Both are notably ‘clean’ fishing methods that catch one fish at a time. The absence of nets in both methods ensures the fishery is ‘dolphin free’.

Fishery tonnage

5,000 metric tonnes (combined with AAFA Pacific albacore tuna - south fishery)

Commercial market

Canned albacore is sold in the US and other markets around the world. Fresh and frozen albacore loins are marketed in both the US and other markets around the world.
