Sustainability notes
This is an overview of how the Fraser River unit of the British Columbia sockeye salmon fishery scored in assessment against the MSC standard. For the certifiers evaluation please download the full public certification report with detailed information on the performance of this fishery against the criteria of the MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing.
The fishery scored as given below in assessment against the MSC standard for sustainable fishing. This assessment was for five species of salmon, caught using multiple gear types. The highest possible score for each principle is 100 and a fishery must score at least 80 against each principle to get certified:
|
MSC Principle |
Fishery Performance |
|
Principle 1: Sustainability of Exploited Stock |
Overall: 83.4, Pass |
|
Principle 2: Maintenance of Ecosystem |
Overall: 82.3, Pass |
|
Principle 3: Effective Management System |
Overall: 87.4, Pass |
To review the points on which the fishery scored well (e.g. over 90), and those where it achieved ‘conditional’ scores in the 60-79 range, please see Section 10 of the Public Certification Report on the Assessment downloads page.
Over the 5 year period of certification, the fishery has committed to achieving a total of 17 conditions. Progress against these conditions will be monitored during the annual surveillance audits.
