The Patagonian scallop fishery was certified as sustainable according to the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) standard/ under the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) certification scheme in December 2006.

The Patagonian scallop fishery operates wholly within Argentina’s Economic Exclusive Zone, in waters between the Argentine border with Uruguay and Tierra del Fuego in southern Argentina.

This deep-water fishery is harvested by four factory vessels. It is conducted in sandy areas with strong currents.

The fishery's MSC certification is held by Glaciar Pesquera SA, which is owned by an Argentine entrepreneur and Clearwater Seafoods of Canada. Glaciar Pesquera is one of the two companies authorised to fish scallops in this region. The companies have two factory vessels each, and they are limited to catching scallops greater than 55 mm in height.

"The Argentine scallop industry is committed to responsible fishing and we are actively engaged in providing ongoing support to the Argentine government's efforts to ensure continued health and sustainability of the scallop resource, MSC certification will legitimize and reward our efforts to be environmentally responsible."

Eduardo Gonzalez Lemmi
President, Glaciar Pesquera

"Sustainability has and will always be a lifelong commitment of our company. Our goal is to ensure our corporate philosophies are reflected in our products and in our fishing operations. The MSC eco-label demonstrates our commitment to the long-term sustainability of the species we harvest from the sea. It also assures the increasingly eco-conscious consumer they are buying a product that is harvested in a sustainable and responsible manner and one that will be enjoyed by our children and their children for all the generations to come."

Colin MacDonald
Chief Executive Officer, Clearwater

The fishery was certified to the MSC standard in December 2006, the first scallop fishery in the world to achieve this rigorous environmental standard for well-managed and sustainable fisheries. Approximately 50 percent of the frozen-at-sea scallops are sold into European markets; an additional 40 percent are sold in the United States, with most of the remainder going to Canadian markets.

Overview of how the Patagonian Scallop Fishery scored in assessment against the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) environmental standard for sustainable fishing.

This is an overview of how the Patagonian scallop fishery scored in
assessment against the MSC standard. For the certifiers evaluation
please download the full public certification report with detailed information on the performance of this fishery against
the criteria of the MSC environmental standard for sustainable fishing.

The fishery scored as follows in assessment against the MSC standard for sustainable fishing. The highest possible score for each principle is 100 and a fishery must score at least 80 against each principle to get certified:

MSC Principle

Fishery Performance

Overall: 92 Pass

Sustainability strengths

Some of the points on which the fishery scored over 90 are outlined below.

Principle 1: the state of the fish stock

Fishing effort is monitored by recording trawl positions from Global Positioning Systems and this allows estimating the total area of the sea floor swept by the net in each tow very precisely. A precise map of fishing can be drawn this way and compared with maps of stock structure which are produced by dredge surveys. In this way both stock and fishing are monitored quite accurately.

Principle 2: the impact of the fishery on the marine environment

The potential risks of the fishery on the ecosystem and the benthic habitat associated with scallop beds have been evaluated. There is regular sampling programme, and ‘Remotely Operated Towed Vehicle’ used to obtain video record of the sea floor which show no biogenic benthic structure on the sea floor which can be affected by the passage of the trawl. Captured non-target species are also immediately returned to the sea and the fishing has little impact on the benthic ecosystem.

Principle 3: the fishery management systems

The management system sets catch levels that maintain the target population, and account for non-target species. Management addresses spatial structure of the stock and annual catch level are specified for each bed as Total Allowable Catch (TAC) based on survey information. The fishing beds are closed when the catches reach the established TAC.

Challenges

In order to ensure its continuing
sustainable operation this fishery made a commitment to improving its performance
where it scored between 60-80. Some of the actions the fishery has committed to
are:

Within a maximum of 4 years, starting from the certification of the fishery it will be necessary to commence study of the variability of the natural mortality rate for each bed, within each management unit.

More about Patagonia scallop

Patagonian scallops live at depths of 40-200 metres and inhabit soft bottom, mainly muddy-sandy substrates. Sexes are separate and sexual maturity is reached at 45 mm shell height, at approximately two years of age. The legal commercial size is 55 mm.

More about the fishing methods

The fishing method utilised consists of two trawl nets that operate on each side of the vessel. The gear has a total length of 13 metres. The mouth of the net is held open by two large "doors" which are attached to either side of the net. The net is constructed of 6 mm polypropylene twine and has a 10 cm mesh size. The average towing time is about 15 minutes and the catch is processed mechanically on board. The by-catch and non-commercial size scallops are separated by drums and returned to the sea during the first 5 minutes after the haul is finished.

Fishery tonnage

45,000 tonnes

Commercial market

Approximately 50% of the frozen-at-sea scallops are sold into European markets; an additional 40% is sold into US. Most of the remainder are sold to Canadian markets.
