Fishery location

Fishing method

Pelagic trawl

Fishery management

The fisheries are managed according to EU Agreements. This agreement is implemented in Sweden under National management systems, and advised by ICES.

The North Sea Herring quota for 2008 is a total of 13 051 tons. 11 004 of this quota comes from the Netherlands in an exchange quota with 6564 tons of blue whiting and with 12547 tons of NVG-herring (HER 1/2). Sweden also has a quota of 846 tons herring in the Norwegian zone.

The 2008 quota for Western Baltic Herring (area 22-24) is 7 926 tons and for Herring in the Baltic, (area 25-29) is 51 047 tons.

The quota for Sprat in the Baltic (area 22-32) is 86 670 tons.

Commercial market

Members of SVERIGES PELAGISKA PRODUCENTORGANISATION can sell their catch in Sweden or to buyers in other countries. Some of the catch may be delivered to Norwegian & Danish fish auctions. There is also industrial sale to Danish, Dutch and Swedish processing plants.

Assessment timeline

The assessment process is expected to take 11 months. Please see the download section for a detailed assessment timeline.

The MSC ecolabel can only be applied to product from certified fisheries. The MSC program does allow, in certain circumstances and within strict traceability requirements, the MSC ecolabel to be applied following certification to product caught before the actual date of certification. The target eligibility date therefore represents the date from which products may become eligible to carry the MSC ecolabel, however they cannot be sold until and if the fishery is certified. The actual eligibility date will be determined if the fishery is certified to the MSC standard.

To find out more about when fish from this fishery may be sold with the MSC ecolabel, please follow this link (http://www.msc.org/get-certified/supply-chain/eligibility-dates).
