MSC assessment status

The certification body, Scientific Certification Systems, Inc. (SCS), has announced that the Scotian shelf shrimp fishery is now entering the information gathering phase of the assessment. The primary objective of this stage is to collect information on the fishery and in particular to speak to representatives of the fishery, fishery management bodies and other stakeholders of the fishery. Meetings will be carried out over the period 5th August, 2010 at the Harbour View Holiday Inn Hotel in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Any stakeholder with information on this fishery that should be considered in the assessment, or who wishes to meet with SCS should contact Adrienne Vincent , as soon as possible.

FAO statistical area 21, operating in Shrimp Fishing Areas (SFA) 13, 14, 15 in the North West Atlantic.

Fishery management

Managed by an Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) published by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), through Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and is supported by an Advisory Committee.Management advice is implemented through the TAC system by adjustment of annual quota per license per Shrimp Fishing Area (SFA).

Commercial market

The inshore fleet focuses on the shell-off cooked and peeled product, which is primarily processed on land. Predominant markets are in the US and Europe.

Assessment timeline

The assessment process is expected to take 10 months and is scheduled for completion around May 2011. Please see the download section for a detailed assessment timeline.

The MSC ecolabel can only be applied to product from certified fisheries. The MSC program does allow, in certain circumstances and within strict traceability requirements, the MSC ecolabel to be applied following certification to product caught before the actual date of certification. The target eligibility date therefore represents the date from which products may become eligible to carry the MSC ecolabel, however they cannot be sold until and if the fishery is certified. The actual eligibility date will be determined if the fishery is certified to the MSC standard.

Tonnage of the fishery

Total greenweight taken in 2008 was 4321 mt and 2846 mt in 2009.
