MSC assessment status
The certification body MacAlister Elliott & Partners Ltd (MEP)., has announced its intention to use the MSC’s default Assessment Tree (including Performance Indicators and Scoring Guideposts) in the evaluation of the SARPC toothfish fishery against the MSC Principles and Criteria.
The default Assessment Tree is defined in the MSC Fisheries Assessment Methodology (FAM).
Any persons wishing to comment on this proposed use of the default Assessment Tree are invited to contact Dr Jo Gascoigne or Caroline Gregg by 5pm GMT, 15th January 2010.
Furthermore, MacAlister Elliott & Partners Ltd. (MEP), has announced that the SARPC toothfish fishery is now entering the information gathering phase of the assessment. The primary objective of this stage is to collect information on the fishery and in particular to speak to representatives of the fishery, fishery management bodies and other stakeholders of the fishery. Meetings will be carried out over the period of the 3rd – 5th February 2010 in Paris, France.
Any stakeholder with information on this fishery that should be considered in the assessment, or who wishes to meet with MEP should contact Michael Stockwell, as soon as possible.

Fishery location
Southern Ocean – EEZ of the Terres Australes et Antarctiques Françaises (TAAF): Area around the islands of Kerguelen and Crozet. CCAMLR areas 58.6 and 51 (Crozet) and 58.5.1 (Kerguelen), with a small element in FAO area 51.

Scientific assessment and advice provided by the Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle (Paris); level of TAC set by French Govt. (Ministère d’Outre-Mer Ministère des Affaires Etrangères and Ministère d’Agriculture et Pêche) ; fishery managed and administered by TAAF (part of Ministère d’Outre-Mer).

The target eligibility date for this fishery is the 1st September 2011.
The MSC ecolabel can only be applied to product from certified fisheries. The MSC program does allow, in certain circumstances and within strict traceability requirements, the MSC ecolabel to be applied following certification to product caught before the actual date of certification. The target eligibility date therefore represents the date from which products may become eligible to carry the MSC ecolabel, however they cannot be sold until and if the fishery is certified. The actual eligibility date will be determined if the fishery is certified to the MSC standard.

The total 2009/10 landings for this fishery was 5800 tonnes which was the full TAC allocation for this fishery.
