A sustainable fishing pioneer

2002-2012: Gottfried Friedrichs celebrates its 10th MSC anniversary
Gottfried Friedrichs is celebrating a decade in partnership with MSC. Ten years ago, this traditional Hamburg-based firm was the first company to sell MSC certified wild salmon in Germany, making it a pioneer in the area of sustainable fishing. It is still expanding its range of MSC certified products and has just launched MSC certified small-bead German caviar.
Fish and seafood with the MSC ecolabel are very popular
Around 50 per cent of wild fish products sold in Germany carry the blue sustainable seafood label, and numbers are increasing all the time because both consumers and retailers are firmly committed to maintaining fish stocks.
What the producer FRIEDRICHS says
“When we introduced our FRIEDRICHS Kodiak wild smoked salmon in 2002, we were one of the pioneers in this area, and the first company in Germany to sell MSC certified wild smoked salmon,” says Kathrin Runge, Marketing/PR Manager at Gottfried Friedrichs.“And of course we are delighted that MSC certified products have taken off so well in recent years.”
What the MSC says
Marnie Bammert, Country Manager of the MSC office in Germany, adds, “Ten years ago, Gottfried Friedrichs was one of the first companies in the world to collaborate with us. It was a big step forwards for us in January 2002 when wild salmon from FRIEDRICHS with the MSC ecolabel started appearing on the German market – they were the first MSC certified salmon products in Germany. We have been working closely with FRIEDRICHS ever since.” Even today, hand-caught MSC certified Kodiak wild smoked salmon from FRIEDRICHS is one of the top sellers in the family firm’s range. “We had our own office in Seattle as far back as 1926 because Alaska became a global benchmark for sustainable fishing very early on. Even today, we foster intensive contact with our local suppliers and know most of our fishermen personally by name,” stresses Kathrin Runge.
Gottfried Friedrichs now offers a total of 30 products with the MSC ecolabel
Since 2002, the producer of fine fish has been steadily expanding its range of sustainably caught premium fine fish. In 2009, FRIEDRICHS became the first supplier in Germany to source its entire herring and matjes range from sustainable fisheries. The Gottfried Friedrichs plant in Poland recently became MSC certified as well. Gottfried Friedrichs now offers a total of 30 products with the MSC ecolabel, which account for 40 per cent of the company’s turnover.
New MSC certified product: FRIEDRICHS small-bead German caviar
Gottfried Friedrichs is focused on sustainability and is continuing to expand its MSC certified range in its MSC anniversary year. MSC certified FRIEDRICHS German small-bead caviar from herring roe is available now. FRIEDRICHS German small-bead caviar is obtained from black herring roe and is characterised by uniform, small beads that are particularly aromatic, tangy and fresh. The fine beads are extremely attractive and make an excellent garnish for sauces, vinaigrettes and mayonnaises. The fish roe is sourced from MSC certified sustainable fisheries.
