Berlin, 22 October 2009, - German fish and delicatessen specialist Appel Feinkost from Cuxhaven announced that it will add the MSC ecolabel for third-party certified sustainable fishing, to all its herring and mackerel products.
From the end of this year, the world’s best known sustainable seafood ecolabel will be applied to all 29 herring products as well as mackerel filets in tomato sauce from Appel Feinkost. It is a commitment from Germany’s market leader in tinned fish, which will make an important contribution helping to safeguard seafood supplies for the future.
Appel Feinkost launched its first three MSC-labelled herring filets with great success in early 2009, helping to further establish the movement to a more environmentally friendly diet of sustainably caught fish. By labelling its complete herring and mackerel range, the upmarket seafood specialist will be able to meet the increasing market demand for sustainable seafood.
Herring and mackerel count among Germany’s most popular fish species. However, not only are they an important source of food for humans, but also for many other marine species – an environmentally sound resource-management is essential for preserving marine life and fish stocks for coming generations.
“We are delighted about Appel’s commitment to the protection of fish stocks. Appel’s new MSC-labelled product line will make it even easier for consumers to purchase sustainably caught fish and thus reward environmentally conscious fishermen,” says Marnie Bammert, MSC Country Manager Germany, Switzerland and Austria.
Appel Feinkost is a company with tradition. The delicatessen specialist started its business 130 years ago. Since 2008 Appel Feinkost is Germany’s market leader in tinned fish.
