As an MSC Chain of Custody certificate holder you’re playing an important part in helping to meet the increasing demand for sustainable and traceable seafood. You’re also assuring customers and supporting well managed fisheries. The next step is to ensure you have a licence agreement so you can apply the blue MSC label to certified product.

The blue MSC label - promoting your certification

The blue MSC label is one of the most effective tools to communicate sustainability to seafood consumers and can be found on over 25,000 products in around 100 countries.

Independent research conducted on our behalf in 2014 revealed that almost half (46%) of respondents agreed they trust brands that use ecolabels more than those that don’t. After recommendations from friends or family, independent ecolabels were seen as the most trustworthy form of information for ensuring environmental and social responsibility.

I have my certificate, now what do I do?

  • Ensure the measures your company put in place to gain certification are applied consistently.
  • Be prepared: to verify continued compliance, your certifier will carry out audits annually over the 3 year period of certification. (Certain specific types of organisation will be eligible for reduced audit frequency of 18 months).
  • Report any changes in your operation that affect your certificate (e.g. new suppliers, new sites, or adding new certified species) to your certification body.
  • Train any new staff to meet the Chain of Custody processes your company put in place.
