Got a question about the ocean and fishing? Ask one of our experts and we'll provide the answer.
Your questions answered
The ocean and fishing are curious subjects. Many of us have unanswered questions about life below water. At the Marine Stewardship Council, our experts have studied the ocean and marine life. Promote ocean literacy in your classroom by encouraging students to ask a question. We'll then get back to you with a response. The answer might be written, by video or we may even beam our expert into your classroom.
Matt Watson
Matt has spent nearly 20 years working with the ocean—both out at sea and on land. Today, he works with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), helping fisheries catch seafood in ways that protect the ocean for the future.
When he’s not working, Matt still loves getting out on the water. He is the President of Western Australian Seabird Rescue, where he helps lead a team of volunteers who rescue and care for thousands of seabirds every year.
Matt knows a lot about seabirds and how to keep them safe, especially from the impacts of fishing. He’s also studied climate change and understands how it affects our oceans, wildlife, and the people who depend on the sea for food and jobs.
Dr Adrian Gutteridge
His relationship with sharks began when he was a self-professed “frothing little grommit”, terrified of sharks when surfing on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia. His terror turned to fascination though on a uni field trip on the Great Barrier Reef when he was snorkelling and a shark swam by. He was transfixed, absolutely forgot what he was meant to be doing and followed the shark until it swam off into the deep blue… and he’s not stopped since!
As a marine scientist with expertise in shark ecology and biology, Adrian’s research has involved tag and release, collecting life-history information and fisheries assessments.
Bill Holden
Bill Holden loves to talk about tuna.
Before joining the MSC in 2009, Bill worked as the skipper of a fishing business in Tonga, where he caught snapper and tuna. During this time, he served as director of the Pacific Islands Tuna Industry Association.
Today, Bill is a Senior Fisheries Outreach Manager for the MSC based in Sydney, Australia, and working with fisheries across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Bill is passionate about helping fisheries improve their practices so that oceans can continue to provide food and livelihoods for generations to come.
