What is cod?

Cod is a hugely popular fish and has been part of the European diet since the Stone Age. There are three true cod species (in the genus Gadus) known, Atlantic, Pacific, and Greenland. Cod has a mildly flavoured, moist white meat and can be prepared in many ways.

Cod is also one of the most widely eaten white fish in North America, known for its mild taste and versatility. It is a good source of lean protein and is commonly used in dishes such as fish and chips, stews, and baked seafood recipes.

Is cod sustainable?

Cod carrying the MSC blue fish label is certified sustainable, meaning the fishery has been independently assessed to the MSC Fisheries Standard.

At the MSC, we believe there is no such thing as a sustainable species, only sustainable stocks, which are groups of fish managed to ensure long-term health and balance. When you see the MSC blue fish label on cod products, it means the fishery meets strict requirements for environmental performance and traceability.

Sustainability for cod means:
  • Healthy fish stocks that are maintained at levels allowing future generations to thrive.
  • Minimal environmental impact through responsible fishing methods.
  • Effective fishery management and traceability throughout the supply chain.

Bonus fact

Although cod are usually found at depths between 20 feet to 200 feet, they mate at the depth of 660 feet. Despite being slow swimmers, they will travel up to 200 miles to reach their breeding ground during mating season. Spawning takes place from January to April, where males often display their fins as part of the courtship. Once attaining a partner, newly formed couples swim together during the spawning period.
