This year’s China Fisheries and Seafood Expo (CFSE) in Qingdao was another valuable opportunity to strengthen partnerships between the MSC, certified fisheries, and seafood businesses across the region.

Sharing Oceania sustainability stories

At the expo, MSC China hosted its second Fish for Future Forum, bringing together experts to discuss the future of sustainable seafood. Guest speakers Marcelo Hidalgo from FIA Papua New Guinea and Kiing Gerner from Simplot Australia – John West shared their organisations’ sustainability journeys from fishery improvements and certification to consumer engagement and community impact.

Delegates from across China’s seafood industry, including global retailers and brands, joined the discussion and shared perspectives on how sustainable seafood is gaining momentum among Chinese consumers. Across the busy show floor, MSC partners such as Austral Fisheries, GFC Brolos, Raptis, SBT Purse Seine, Simplot, FIA PNG, Stehr Group and Tasmanian Seafoods were among those represented.

Building connections through Austrade networking

Before the expo, Austrade hosted an industry briefing and networking evening that showcased premium Australian seafood and fostered new trade relationships. The MSC team presented an overview of Australia’s growing portfolio of more than 30 certified species, highlighting the country’s leadership in sustainable fisheries management. Delegates also learned about the latest seafood trends and consumer insights from China’s evolving market.

Continuing engagement at CIIE Shanghai

In Shanghai, at the China International Import Expo (CIIE), conversations continued with Australian MSC-certified partners including Walker Seafoods Tuna, GFC – Brolos, Fremantle Octopus and KB’s Seafood. These meetings focused on expanding market access and showcasing the MSC blue fish tick as a mark of traceable, sustainable seafood for Chinese buyers.

Looking ahead to a shared sustainable future

From Qingdao to Shanghai, sustainability was front and centre in every conversation. As demand for responsibly sourced seafood grows, the MSC will continue working with fisheries, brands and retailers in Oceania and China to strengthen market trust and ensure healthy oceans for generations to come.
