Our Capacity Building Program supports fisheries worldwide that are improving towards sustainability and MSC certification. It’s part of the MSC's commitment to provide equal access for all those seeking certification, particularly small-scale fisheries and those in the developing world.

The Capacity Building Program is designed to:

  • Equip stakeholders in developing countries with the knowledge and skills required to implement successful Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs).
  • Enable fisheries scientists and experts located in developing countries to increase their knowledge and understanding of the MSC Fisheries Standard. This will enable them to join the MSC’s technical consultant register, support fisheries working towards MSC certification and work with certification bodies as assessors.

Capacity Building Toolkit

The MSC Capacity Building Toolkit is a comprehensive guide for fishery clients, managers, scientists, consultants and other stakeholders engaged with fisheries working towards MSC certification.

It provides practical information on the MSC Fisheries Standard, showcases examples of best practice, describes what information will be checked during an assessment and outlines possible actions that could be implemented during a FIP. The Capacity Building Toolkit is an invaluable resource for those working with Fishery Improvement Projects as they work towards MSC certification.

Capacity building workshops

The MSC offers regular workshops to a range of stakeholder groups including government, industry, universities and NGOs, as well as fisheries experts and consultants, who wish to gain expertise of the MSC requirements.

Workshops are available at three levels:

Level 1 – Introductory

One day workshop that introduces participants to the MSC program, the MSC Fisheries Standard and the MSC's fishery improvement tools.

Level 2 – Comprehensive

A five-day workshop that takes participants through the Fisheries Standard at a detailed level and covers how to benchmark a fishery against the MSC requirements and how to identify actions for improvement. Participants will also learn how to use the MSC fishery improvement tools and how to apply the Risk-Based Framework to data limited fisheries.

Level 3 – Practical

A practical workshop during which participants will conduct a gap analysis of a fishery and develop a fishery improvement action plan under the guidance of an MSC assessor.
