Is hake sustainable?

Sustainable hake is not available yet in Australia and New Zealand. It is widely available in Europe with the blue fish tick.

What is hake?

Southern hake (Merluccuis australis) is a member of the cod family. Hake flesh is moist and white with few bones and a soft, delicate texture. Hake, like its relative hoki, is often prepared as crumbed fillets and fish fingers.

How do I know if hake is sustainable?

Hake carrying the MSC blue fish tick is certified sustainable. MSC labelled hake comes from a fishery that has been independently assessed to the MSC Fisheries standard. Companies using the blue fish tick all along the supply chain have been assessed to ensure products can be traced back to an MSC certified fishery.

Why is there no sustainable hake in Australia and New Zealand?

There are currently no hake products with the blue fish tick available in Australia and New Zealand. Consumer demand is important. You can use your voice to ask your local supermarket, fish shop or restaurant to consider stocking hake with the MSC’s blue fish tick.

The New Zealand Hake Trawl operates in the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in three management areas around the country’s South Island. The major commercial fisheries in New Zealand waters are managed by Fisheries New Zealand, through a quota management system.

Hake facts

Southern hake is native to New Zealand waters, but there are more than a dozen hake and whiting species that inhabit temperate and cold waters in the northern and southern hemispheres.
