Washington, D.C. - The Argentine hoki fishery (Macruronus magellanicus) had its MSC sustainability certification reinstated today.
During its regular surveillance audit in May 2019 the assessor, Organización Internacional Agropecuaria (OIA), found that the fishery did not meet the MSC Fisheries Standard relating to unwanted catch of the target stock, and therefore the certificate was suspended in June 2019. The recent surveillance audit by the assessor found that the fishery satisfactorily addressed the corrective action plan for the issue, and therefore reinstated the fishery’s certification.
The fishery companies, San Arawa SAU, Empresa Pesquera de la Patagonia y Antártida SA and Estremar SAU, are now able to commercialize the different products of the hoki species with the recognized MSC blue fish label.
The fishery was first certified in 2012, and the current certification will be valid until 2023. Audits are carried out annually to ensure the fishery continues to meet the MSC standard.
