15 products vie for public’s vote for MSC UK Product of the Year - Consumer Choice Award, from fish and chips, to cat food, and Omega-3 supplements
Aquaplanet inflatable kayak and two Finisterre backpacks up for grabs in competition
From premium dinner dishes, to the first ever pet food entry, canned products as well as family favourites, this year’s MSC UK Product of the Year - Consumer Choice Award shortlist demonstrates the huge range of certified sustainable seafood available in UK shops and offers consumers the chance to pick their favourite.
The 15-strong shortlist which also features a fish oil and surimi fish stick, both made with certified Alaskan pollack, represents just a fraction of the more than 1,600 MSC certified products UK consumers can buy safe in the knowledge they can be traced back to healthy stocks.
To vote for their favourite product, all consumers have to do is head to msc.org/uk/POTY/25. Everyone who votes will be in with a chance of winning* a large Aquaplanet inflatable kayak worth £579 or one of two Nautilus 23 litre backpacks made by Finisterre.
Voting opens today (14 July), and the public have until 29 August to pick their favourite. Tesco’s Finest Cornish Sardines in Tomato Sauce scooped the Award last year, in a hotly contested competition when more than 10,000 votes were cast.
Seth McCurry, MSC UK & Ireland Senior Commercial Manager, said: “The diversity of products on this year’s shortlist for the MSC UK Product of the Year – Consumer Choice Award gives shoppers a flavour of the huge range of the sustainable seafood products currently available in UK stores.
“The public have got their work cut out to choose between a lifestyle supplement, pet food, family favourite dishes and fresh and ambient seafood. It’s wonderful to see this wide array of products competing for the Award this year and I’m sure it will be a closely contested vote.”
Amongst those vying for the title this year are a selection of family favourite meals including battered cod fillets, from both Asda and Sainsbury’s, battered cod and chips from Iceland, Co-op’s fish pie, Bird’s Eye’s Captain’s Discoveries Dusted Lemon and Pepper Fish Fillets, and Lidl’s salmon and pea risotto.
Amongst the chilled products, the public can vote for Waitrose’s No.1 Moules Mariniere with Wild Garlic and Chardonnay, Fish Said Fred Smoked Haddock and LEAP Wild Smoked Sockeye Salmon.
Princes and John West both have a tinned tuna products on the shortlist alongside Delicius anchovy fillets from Cantabria. The Vici Big Seafood Stick is also in the running whilst Wiley’s Finest Peak EPA fish oil and Sheba Filets Chicken with sustainable tuna, represent the health and pet food market respectively.
The MSC UK Product of the Year winner will be announced at the MSC UK Awards ceremony in Scotland in October.
