Aramark is proud to expand Marine Stewardship Council Certification to 16 Canadian universities and colleges

PARTNER RELEASE

Aramark, a global leader in food, facilities management and uniforms, has achieved MSC Chain of Custody certification, allowing it to source and serve wild-caught seafood that is sustainable and traceable to a certified fishery. The company is rolling out the MSC program in 15 of its largest university and college accounts across the country to offer certified sustainable seafood options to tens of thousands of students, staff and visitors.

This milestone builds on the success at Dalhousie University, the first Aramark account to achieve MSC certification in 2014, and through the MSC program will have a positive impact on the seafood purchasing practices in an important group of higher education institutions in Canada. It also further solidifies the Aramark commitment to support sustainable fisheries and solutions that promote healthier oceans for generations to come.

Education is key

We are proud to be partnering with the Marine Stewardship Council to identify MSC certified species on our menus through the use of the blue ecolabel,” said Scott Barnhart, Senior Vice President, Global Supply Chain & Procurement at Aramark. “We continue to grow the number of MSC certified species on our menus as part of our commitment to responsible sourcing and we’re focusing on practices that help us educate and engage our consumers around this global issue.”

MSC is the world's leading certification and ecolabelling program for sustainable wild caught seafood. It begins with independent certification of fisheries and extends through the entire supply chain. MSC Chain of Custody ensures that from ocean to plate, MSC labelled seafood is purchased from a certified supplier, properly segregated and labelled so it is never substituted with non-certified species, and is traceable back to a certified source.

A growing commitment to certified sustainable seafood

Throughout 2016, Aramark will serve approximately 30,000 pounds of certified seafood at the following colleges and universities, and expects that volume to grow through the successful promotion of their partnership with the MSC:

  • Carleton University (Ottawa, Ontario)
  • Concordia University (Montreal, Quebec)
  • Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
  • Durham College/University of Ontario Institute of Technology (Oshawa, Ontario)
  • Glendon College (Toronto, Ontario)
  • MacEwan University (Edmonton, Alberta)
  • Memorial University (St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador)
  • Saint Mary’s University (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
  • Seneca College (Toronto, Ontario)

  • University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta)
  • University of BC Okanagan (Kelowna, British Columbia)
  • University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta)
  • University of Lethbridge (Lethbridge, Alberta)
  • University of Manitoba (Winnipeg, Manitoba)
  • Wilfrid Laurier University (Waterloo, Ontario)
  • York University (Toronto, Ontario)

“We are extremely proud to count Aramark Canada among our partners,” said Jay Lugar, Program Director for MSC in Canada. “Their work to achieve MSC certification and enthusiasm for communicating their engagement will undoubtedly provide considerable added value as their customers look to them to provide sustainable dining options that meet the highest global standards.”

Beyond universities and colleges

The Group version of the MSC Chain of Custody certification obtained by Aramark also enables the company to extend participation in the program to other customers interested in serving MSC certified seafood.

Aramark Canada uses MSC certified cod, haddock, pollock and sole on menus from coast to coast. The company will be promoting the use of these certified species through point of sale material designed in partnership with MSC.
