Durham pupils go back to school with sustainable brain food

Certified sustainable fish are on the menu from this term for Durham’s primary school children. Pupils across the LEA’s 217 schools are now being offered MSC certified sustainable fish each week as part of their school meals provided by LEA caterer, Taylor Shaw.  Fish provides vital nutrients for developing brains and, by serving MSC certified fish, Durham LEA are helping to ensure a sustainable future for the world’s oceans. The school’s certification follows the certification of Durham University in 2012 where students too can find MSC certified seafood on the menu.

Good for you, good for the seas

Overfishing is a global challenge with, perhaps surprisingly, a very local solution. By choosing fish from a certified sustainable source, Durham’s caterers and pupils can help to encourage other fishermen to get their boats certified and recognised for reaching some of the highest benchmarks of sustainability. The idea is to create a ‘race to the top’ in fisheries management as more and more fisheries try to get certified.

Lynda Walker, General Manager from Taylor Shaw said:  “I am delighted we have achieved this new certification and it shows our commitment to more sustainable practices.  We are sure the children will enjoy the fish dishes”.

Paving the way

The certified fish also includes an educational element, with all of the schools becoming members of the MSC’s ‘Fish and Kids’ programme, including curriculum-linked lessons, assemblies and even holiday activities. In preparation for the new menu items, several schools have already hosted special assemblies and lessons to teach their pupils about the importance of sustainability and the difference they can make to our oceans.

Adele Fash, from the MSC, said: “This is great step by Durham LEA and Taylor Shaw who look after Durham’s school catering. I’m looking forward to returning and seeing pupils learning about sustainable fishing and the difference they can make to our oceans. By choosing MSC certified seafood, Durham is helping to support sustainable fishermen around the world and encourage others to follow their example.”
