MSC welcomes applications for autumn 2013 student scholarship program

We are now accepting applications for our autumn 2013 research scholarship. Undergraduates and postgraduates from around the globe are invited to submit their applications before 11 November 2013 to be in with a chance of securing the £4,000 scholarship grant.

The MSC’s research scholarship program aims to support the transformation of the world’s seafood markets and promote sustainable fishing practice by supporting the study of the problems and solutions needed to achieve best practice in fisheries management and the integrity of the seafood supply chain.

Qualification requirements

Qualifying projects will have the objective of studying an aspect of environmental improvement, performance or best practice in fisheries or supply chain management. This may involve a direct study of one particular fishery, a comparative study of fisheries management, or else focus on the challenges of supply chain transparency. Direct linkage to an MSC certified fishery or one wishing to become certified is not a requirement, although it will be an additional point of interest for the MSC.

Informing policy and measuring environmental impacts

Commenting on the scholarship program, MSC Standards Director David Agnew, said: "The MSC scholarship complements our existing program of extensive scientific research. We fund a number of research projects each year to inform our policy development, monitor our performance and measure the environmental impacts of MSC certified fisheries".

"This scholarship program not only provides the recipients with an excellent career opportunity, it also generates further MSC funded independent environmental and fisheries research."

The MSC scholarship program is an international research fund, now in its fourth term. Current scholarship students are engaged in research topics in areas such as coastal fisheries management, seasonal management of specific species, and management structures for driving seafood sustainability.
