New fisheries certified, re-certified and in assessment

Since our last newsletter in June, two fisheries were certified, one was re-certified and two entered full assessment in the Americas region.

  • The NAFO Division 4R Atlantic herring purse seine fishery became the first herring fishery in Canada to achieve MSC certification.
  • The first freshwater fishery to gain MSC certification, Waterhen Lake walleye and northern pike gillnet commercial fishery, attained certification as a sustainable and well-managed fishery.
  • The South Georgia Patagonian toothfish fishery earned re-certification against the MSC standard.
  • The Maine Certified Sustainable Lobster Association, Inc., entered the Gulf of Maine lobster fishery into full assessment.
  • A portion of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence fall herring gillnet fishery was entered into assessment by the Gulf Nova Scotia Herring Federation.
